Aquanaut

The aquanaut is a 55-foot-long wooden tug boat that sank in 1967 and is one of the most intact of the wrecks around Key West. In fact, it is in near-perfect condition. The tug was used as a working tug by the Chet Alexander Marine Salvage Company. The tug sank one day while docked and Chet Alexander decided the boat was not salvageable after an inspection.

The Aquanaut is found in 75 feet of water, close to the edge of the Gulfstream about one half-mile south of the Western Sambo Reef. There are no buoys or markers for people to find the wreck, so you need to go with someone that has a good idea as to where it is. The type of fish and sea animals that commonly make the wreck their home include crabs, shrimp, lobster, yellowtail snapper and stingwrays.
