Dive Site Characteristics

Nine Foot Stake is particularly known for its shallow waters ranging an average depth of between 12 and 29 feet. An I-beam measuring nine feet tall marks this site. The shallow seawater provides ideal conditions for underwater photographers, snorkelers and scuba divers alike. Avid fishermen who have a saltwater fishing license from the state of Florida can also catch fish and lobster at this site. Remnants of an old lighthouse can still be seen on certain parts of the reef. Boaters who wish to moor at this site must secure their anchors in the sand in order to avoid damaging the reef.

Marine Life

The clear seawater at this site makes it possible to enjoy unobstructed views of local sea creatures. Schools of radiantly colored tropical fish can often be seen swimming by this dive site. Snapper, grouper and grunt species are just a few of the specific types of fish that are frequently found at this site. Nurse sharks, hammerheads and sea turtles can also be seen on a regular basis. The moray eel is another common resident.
